For this first Blog post I will walk you through step by step on how I created the 4 different text effect images at the top of this page in Photoshop by using the Blending Options Palette. A reason why this can be a useful skill is because it allows you to create interesting and unique text images that can link to external sites on a webpage. These text images can be used to link to your social media pages, professional resumes, or to your personal blog page(s). When I created these images I wanted to be as consistent as possible by making the text images look similar to the sites they linked too; such as making my Instagram link look like the Instagram logo. There are many different ways you can do this, some more technical than others that I will explain. To keep this organized I have labeled the text images at the top of this page for the following directions.

For the first image, google searched ‘fonts that look like the Instagram logo font’ and then downloaded the one most similar. I decided to do this because I wanted to keep the consistency of the text link being relate-able to the link itself. So after I had my font downloaded, I opened up Photoshop and selected a New File and entered in size and resolution dimensions. Then with the Text Tool I typed “Sienna’s Instagram.” I then adjusted the color with the Color Palette, you can also do this before you type in the layer. After I had the color I wanted, I then opened up the blending options palette by double clicking on the layer. In Blending Options, I added an Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss for a little more detail.

The steps I took to create the next three images are very similar to the first, but I utilized different effects in the Blending Options Palette to demonstrate the various things you can do. After opening up a new file and selected in the dimension size for the file, I did the following:

On the Text Effects Image #2 I selected a generic font in Photoshop then added an inner glow and drop shadow in the Blending Options palette.

On the text image #3 I downloaded a google font and applied a gradient overlay and stroke to the font using the Blending Options palette. I also arced the text.

For the text image #4 I found a font that looks most like the Pinterest font online and also chose the color red to resemble the Pinterest logo. In blending options, I added a color overlay and a stroke around the edge.

As you can see it is very simple and easy to create different text effects in Photoshop. By following these simple steps you can create unique, interesting and professional text links to your blog, and social media pages.
